The 4th Annual Welland Wizards Rose Festival & Tournament was held on June 14th, 15th and 16th at the Youngs Sportsplex. A record 173 teams from 37 different clubs from across Ontario arrived in the Rose City to take part. The result was an excellent weekend of top-quality soccer played by the boys and girls teams aged 8 to 16. The Welland Soccer Club would like to thank all the teams that attended and helped to make the weekend a celebration of our great game; filled with sportsmanship and teamwork from players, coaches, referees, spectators and the tournament organizers alike.
The Welland Soccer Club took home 6 division titles – and showed up very well across all age groups.
The Under-8 Boys Tier A Division saw Welland Wizards Red ‘A’ outlast Welland Wizards Black ‘B’ in the final, winning 4-3 in a shootout after a 2-2 score in regulation. The Under-8 Girls Tier A Division had another great finale with Welland Wizards Black outscoring the Pelham Panthers 2-0 to take the title. The Under-9 Boys Tier A championship match saw Welland Wizards Red take on a highly talented Hamilton Croatia side. Welland goalie, Jacksen Ryan, saved 2 penalty kicks in regulation – and then backstopped his team to a shootout victory. The Under-10 Welland Wizards Red and Black teams both had a great Sunday, with the Wizards Red squad winning the Tier A division for the second straight year besting Hamilton Croatia and the Wizards Black team winning the Tier B division in a shootout over Niagara United White. The Under-12 Welland Wizards girls were also victorious beating Hamilton Croatia 2-0 in the final after 2 great wins in the opening round.
