Elite Level Soccer Experience
The WSC Competitive Travel Team represents elite youth soccer, where players showcase their skills throughout the Niagara Region and beyond. These teams symbolize the spirit of Welland as they compete against other cities and participate in various festivals and tournaments.
Tryout Process
- Minimum Three Tryouts: Each age group has at least three tryout sessions.
- Evaluation Criteria: Players are assessed on technical skills, athleticism, game awareness, effort, attitude, and coachability.
- Selection: The Head Coach, with the Technical Director and Director of Youth Competitive Programs, selects the team.
Commitment Expectations
Participation in the Youth Competitive (Select) program requires a strong commitment to training, games, and ongoing development. Families should be aware of the following expectations and opportunities:
-
Training & Game Schedule
Select teams typically train twice per week and play one game each week. Consistent attendance is important to ensure team cohesion and individual growth. -
Flexibility & Communication
Coaches understand that players and families have other commitments, including vacations and work. At the beginning of the season, coaches will set clear expectations and work with families to accommodate reasonable conflicts when possible. -
Winter Training
Teams prepare during the winter months for the upcoming season, with training typically beginning in November. These sessions are included as part of your Youth Competitive Team registration costs and focus on building fitness, sharpening skills, and strengthening team cohesion before the outdoor season starts. While we understand that some players may have other commitments during the winter, attendance is strongly encouraged to ensure the team enters the season fully prepared. Please note that the registration fee remains the same regardless of participation.
Additional Player Development Opportunities
-
Strength & Conditioning at SE Fitness
Select players have the opportunity to train at the SE Fitness and Athletic Performance Centre located at Youngs Sportsplex. Led by certified trainers, these sessions focus on improving athletic performance, building physical resilience, and reducing the risk of injury. This program is offered to Select players at a special Welland Wizards rate, making professional-grade training more accessible to our athletes. -
Video Analysis
Select teams may also take part in video analysis sessions conducted by the Welland Wizards technical staff using the club’s VEO camera system. These sessions are team-based (not individual) and provide players with valuable insight into game tactics, positional awareness, and areas for improvement—reinforcing key learning objectives from training and matches.
Financial Commitment
- Registration Fee: $600 (U8 to U12) and $650 (U13 and up)
- Includes: Indoor and outdoor training time, two full personalized uniforms, practice kit, and registration for the Summer season.
- Note: Full payment of the registration fee is required before the season starts. Players will not be eligible to participate until the fee is paid in full.
- Festival/Tournament/Training Fees: Approx. $100 (varies based on participation)
The Welland Soccer Club’s competitive travel program offers a comprehensive and elite soccer experience, balancing skill development with the understanding of players’ other commitments.
