Policy Statement

The Welland Soccer Club (WSC) is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our community. We believe in providing equal opportunities for participation in our soccer programs to everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, or ability. Our club upholds the principle that selection for teams and opportunities within the club should be based on merit and a commitment to our core values of respect, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Purpose

This policy aims to:

  • Ensure that all decisions regarding team selection, player development, and leadership opportunities are fair and transparent.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion within our teams and broader club activities.
  • Encourage a culture of respect and understanding among all members of the WSC community.

Scope

This policy applies to all members of the Welland Soccer Club, including players, coaches, staff, volunteers, and parents.

Policy

The Club, in all its activities will not discriminate, or in any way treat anyone less favourably, on grounds of  gender, sexual orientation, marital status, race, nationality, ethnic origin, colour, religion or belief, ability or  disability. It means that The Club will ensure that it treats people fairly and with respect and that, it will  provide access and opportunities for all members of the community to take part in, and enjoy, its  activities.  

The Club will not tolerate harassment, bullying, abuse, or victimization of an individual, which for the  purposes of this policy and the actions and sanction applicable are regarded as discrimination. This  includes sexual or racially based harassment or other discriminatory behaviour, whether physical or verbal. 

The Club is committed to a policy of equal treatment of all members and requires all members to abide  and adhere to these policies; and the requirements of the Declaration of Expectations for Fairness in Sport  (the London Declaration) 2001, Canadian Human Rights Act 1985 and Employment Equity Act 1995 as well  as any amendments to these acts and any new legislation. 

Guidelines

Team Selection and Participation

  • Merit-Based Selection: Selection for teams will be based on the assessment of skills, performance, and potential, as well as the player’s commitment to team values and ethics.
  • Equal Access: All members will have equal access to participate in tryouts, training sessions, and competitive play, with accommodations made where possible to enable participation of members with disabilities.
  • Diverse Representation: WSC will strive for diverse representation on all teams and in leadership positions within the club, reflecting the broad spectrum of our community.

Inclusive Environment

  • Respect and Dignity: All members of the WSC are expected to treat each other with respect and dignity, acknowledging and celebrating differences.
  • Anti-Discrimination: Discrimination, harassment, or any form of unequal treatment based on gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, or ability will not be tolerated. Any incidents of discrimination should be reported immediately and will be addressed promptly.
  • Education and Awareness: WSC will provide education and awareness programs for coaches, players, and parents to foster an inclusive environment and to understand the importance of this policy.

Complaints and Grievances

  • Reporting Mechanism: Members who believe they have been subjected to discrimination or have not been given equal opportunity can report their concerns without fear of retaliation. A clear mechanism for reporting and addressing grievances will be made available to all members.
  • Investigation and Action: All complaints will be taken seriously and investigated promptly and thoroughly. WSC will take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.

Policy Review and Update

WSC is committed to regularly reviewing and updating this policy to ensure it meets the evolving needs of our community and reflects the latest best practices in promoting equality and inclusion.
